Someone, Somewhere

We are living through a global pandemic, the apparently rapidly spreading Covid-19 coronavirus. I do not know how it might impact my trek; at the moment I am carrying on as though everything is still going ahead as planned. What I do know is that this outbreak must be significantly more frightening for those living in disadvantaged countries without access to clean water and sanitation, like those who I am supposed to be helping, so I have resolved to contact WaterAid next week to see if there is anything I can do.

It can be all too easy to succumb to the relentless negativity peddled by the myriad of media outlets we are exposed to these days. I therefore wanted to share this list I wrote of the things which cheer me up to think about.

Someone, Somewhere

Someone, somewhere, is lying beneath a vast canopy of stars, contemplating the mysteries of the cosmos.

Someone, somewhere is galloping bareback across a field, high on adrenaline and exhilaration.

Someone, somewhere is diving into a cool, crystalline ocean to seek delicious respite from the heat.

Someone, somewhere is enjoying a precious moment of peace in a beautiful, tranquil garden.

Someone, somewhere is sharing their innermost secrets with a new lover for the first time.

Someone, somewhere is listening to a song that makes them smile.

Someone, somewhere is laughing until their cheeks and stomach hurt and tears are rolling down their face.

Someone, somewhere is watching the sunset, and marvelling at a beautiful pink-streaked sky that no camera could capture.

Someone, somewhere is helping another person who is less fortunate than they are.

Someone, somewhere is dreaming of a better world, and what they can do to be a part of it.

I hope this list brings a smile to someone, somewhere’s face and that it might inspire you to create your own list of things that make you smile, to look at during difficult times.

PS – I am also going to put the link to my JustGiving page at the end of every post – if you have enjoyed reading my story and would like to sponsor me, then you can do so here (but absolutely no pressure if you just want to check out the content!). Please copy and paste the link:

In October 2019, I was going through a low point with regards my sense of self worth. I was searching for purpose but I was finding it hard to stay positive. One afternoon, an opportunity came across my desk at work: the company I work for partners with WaterAid, and I had been sent the application form whereby 10 selected employee volunteers would be invited to participate in a "Trek Nepal" challenge in October 2020, to support an initiative to deliver clean water solutions to remote communities. Despite my feeling low at the time, when I read the email there was a little spark inside of me which told me I would regret it if I didn't apply, so I decided to do my future self a favour and fill out the form. One month later I received the amazing news that I was one of the successful applicants and that I would be participating in the trek. This is my first time fundraising for anything and I know that this whole experience will be an immensely enriching personal challenge so I have decided to document my journey - both inner (discovery) and outward (training, fundraising and the trek) - in this blog.
